Apple Launches the iPad

Jan 27, 2010

Apple's much anticipated iPad released today.  This will most likey be the best competitor to all the tablet PCs (or Slate PCs) Microsoft discussed at CES a couple of weeks ago.  And will definetly be a competitor to the Amazon Kindle  and other e-readers too.  Prices start at $500, and we are sure to see at least 1 around someone's house we know soon.

Microsoft Exchange 2010 beta

May 27, 2009

I know I'm excited for Exchange 2010, anyone else?  Maybe its because I wasn't so impressed with the improvements that came in 2007, or maybe it's because most of my clients choose to skip that version of Exchange since 2003 works so well.... not sure why it is but I am super excited for 2010 Exchange.  The beta is out now so get on the bandwagon with me and test it out.

Windows Server 2008 R2 RC1 released

May 27, 2009

Microsoft has released the RC1 (release candidate) of the R2 version of Server 2008.  As we all know, the R2 is the 2nd release of the OS that Microsoft started doing on server operating systems.  Yes, there was a Server 2003 R2 as well.  Has some new tools and functionality you may like.  Active Directory in R2 Server 2008 now has a recycle bin for those admins that like to delete things too quickly.  Also contains IIS 7.5, .NET for server core, improved Hyper-V virtualization, and improvements in access for Windows 7, amongst other bells and whistles.

Windows 7 is the best Microsoft OS EVER

May 26, 2009

Microsoft has released the Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) about a month ago.  I've been personally testing Windows 7 in beta and now RC 1 for over 4 months now.  And I absolutely love it.  It is by far the best Microsoft Windows Operating System I've ever used.  They have created a user interface that's remarkably easy to use, fast, and just plain smart.  They have fixed just about every bug I had while I was running Windows Vista.  They have shortened the boot up process.  They have added a few great new tools and features that I just can no longer live without.  I made the switch 2 weeks ago to use Windows 7 RC1 as my primary OS for everyday work and home use.  And I've had nothing but great things to say since.  I highly recommed you keep an eye out for the RTM release and put it in your cart.  It's time to switch back to Windows for your primary OS.  I am recommending all of my clients wait and get new computers with Windows 7 when it comes out.

Intel Upgrades the Xeon Processor

April 1, 2009

Intel released a new line of Xeon server processors on Monday.  Named Nehalem-EP (5500 series), Dell and Cisco both released server product lines Wednesday that had the new line of processors.  This is supposed to be the largest increase in processor performance in the history of the Xeon line.  The new processors remove the front side bus to get direct access to the RAM Memory.

Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 8

March 19, 2009

While many of us have been running the IE 8 Beta version for some time now, the real IE 8 will be available today at 1pm MST for download.  Why should you download it?  Well because it's the newest version, that's why (duh).  It does have some improvements over IE 7 that you will enjoy (or if you are a Mozilla Firefox user, Safari user, Opera user, or Google Chrome user - you may not really enjoy that much but it's worth a test drive).  So, what improvements does it have over IE 7? It's more secure with the SmartScreen filter, the broken page button is nice to run websites in compatibility mode if they are older sites with crap coding, the search is better, the add-ins (accelorators) for Wikipedia and Google and FaceBook and such, privacy browsing, the Web Slices deal is kinda cool.  Try it out for yourself.  I just hope they fix the memory leak issues I have had with the Beta version.

Seagate and AMD Demo 6 GB SATA Drives

March 9, 2009

Seagate and AMD implemented 6 GB SATA technology today in New Orleans.  Currently, we have a 3 GB/sec SATA standard.   They are expecting to ship the new high speed drive technology late in 2009.  New drives (solid state for example) are quickly reaching the 3 GB/sec limit.  If you are planning to build a high-performance PC for gaming, or low-end servers that require speed and SATA technology, this drive technology is for you.

Google Gears Enabled on Opera Mini 9.5

March 3, 2009

There has been a lot of buzz around the tech world about Google Gears.  What is it?  Google will tell you that Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications.  Basically it will make cloud computing more fun, and allows typically web only applications to do some offline stuff.  Say when your ISP screws up your internet.  Well many browsers already offer Google Gears integration, and now the new Opera Mini 9.5 will be doing the same.  Bandwagon browsers - Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera Mini.

AMD vs. Intel - both set to ship 32-nm chips

March 3, 2009

There is now no doubt that 32 nanometer circuitry chips are the future of computing.  Just like 45 nanometer circuitry chips were the future back then.  This has now been proven by both major processor chip manufacturers, AMD and Intel, putting their resources into producing the smaller circuitry chips.  The smaller circuitry will pave the way for a new chip architecture with faster speeds of computing, possibly with integrated GPU, and all with the same energy consumption.  When can you expect these new CPUs?  Intel says it will be producing these chips in Q4 2009, while AMD says they will be more like Q3 2010.

Microsoft Windows Server - for cheap?

February 26, 2009

Tuesday Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the software giant was going to be releasing "something akin to" a netbook version of Windows Server (dubbed "Foundation Server").    He mentioned that although there was NOT high demand at the moment for a cheap server OS, declining prices in the server market make a low-cost server an attractive option for customers.  My main question is what features will they leave out?

Google's Android OS to run on Eee PCs

February 23, 2009

Asustek (Asus), creator of Eee PCs, is currently working on a cheap laptop that will run the Google Android operating system.  Currently most Eee PCs run Linux.  Google’s Android is a version of Linux that the Google group wrote to run on their G1 smartphone.  Of course, Android is a free operating system so there will be no licensing fees to put it on a laptop.

The Many Cores of Intel

February 16, 2009

Senior Vice President Pat Gelsinger discusses the chip maker's future.

Since the creation of Moore's Law in 1965, people have been predicting its death. Even Gordon Moore, the law's creator, had to revise it a couple of times to make it work.

The new wrinkle is that it's no longer just transistors doubling every couple years. Now, it's processor cores and different kinds of chips and spaces between the wires on a chip that are so small you can literally count the atoms between them. Forbes caught up with Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Enterprise Group, to take a look into Intel's future...
